Types of iron on transfers
There are a few different iron on transfer methods, and they are not all the same.

How do iron on transfers work?
- The design is printed onto a film or transfer paper, usually with a white ink layer underneath the colour so it shows up clearly on dark fabric.
- The transfer is prepared, which for DTF means adding and curing an adhesive powder layer.
- The garment is preheated for a few seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
- The transfer is placed face down on the fabric in the correct position.
- Heat and pressure are applied, either with a heat press or a household iron, for around 10 to 15 seconds. Exact temperature, pressure, and time can vary depending on the fabric, so always check the recommended settings for the specific material you are pressing onto.
- The backing is peeled away, either hot or cold depending on the transfer type, leaving the design on the fabric.
- A second press is often done with baking paper over the design to help it bond fully.
How to apply an iron on transfer at home
You do not need a heat press to apply most iron on transfers, though a heat press gives more consistent results. Here is how to do it with a household iron:
- Set the iron to its highest heat setting with steam turned off.
- Place the garment on a hard, flat, heat resistant surface. A folded towel on a table works well.
- Preheat the fabric for a few seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
- Position the transfer face down on the fabric exactly where you want it.
- Press down firmly with the iron, using your body weight, for 10 to 15 seconds without sliding the iron around.
- Peel the backing away slowly, following the instructions for your specific transfer (some peel hot, some need to cool first).
- Cover the design with a thin cloth or baking paper and press again for another 10 seconds to help it bond.

How long do iron on transfers last?
This depends on the type of transfer and how well it is cared for. DTF transfers are known for being especially durable, often lasting 50 or more washes without cracking, peeling, or fading when applied correctly. Vinyl transfers can last a similar amount of time but may crack over time with repeated stretching. Cheaper inkjet transfer paper printed at home tends to crack, peel, or fade much sooner, often within 10 to 20 washes. - Wash garments inside out in cold water
- Avoid bleach and fabric softener
- Tumble dry on low heat or air dry instead
- Do not iron directly on top of the design
What fabrics work with iron on transfers?
DTF transfers work on almost any fabric, including cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, canvas, and denim, in both light and dark colours. Vinyl also works on most fabrics but is better suited to flat, smooth surfaces. Sublimation only works on white or light coloured polyester or polyester coated items, since it cannot print white ink and will not show up on dark or natural fabrics like cotton. What is the difference between an iron on transfer and a sticker? An iron on transfer is designed to bond permanently with fabric using heat, while a sticker uses adhesive and is meant for hard surfaces like bottles, laptops, or packaging. They are not interchangeable.
