Vivid Pro 9-Colour DTF vs Standard DTF: What's the Difference?

Last updated: July 11, 2026

Most people do not think about how many ink channels their DTF printer uses. They upload a file, place an order, and press the transfer onto fabric.

But the number of ink channels is exactly what separates a good-looking print from a great one.

Standard DTF has been around for years. It works well. Our new option, Vivid Pro 9-colour DTF, works better. Here is the difference and how to pick the right one for your order.

What Is Standard DTF?

Standard DTF printing uses five inks: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, and White.

The white ink goes down first as a base layer. It is what makes your design show up clearly on dark fabrics. The CMYK inks then print the colour on top.

Five inks get the job done for most designs. Text, logos, and simple graphics all print well. The limitation is that CMYK mixes colours from just four channels. Some colours cannot be made that way accurately. The printer gets close, but the result can look slightly duller than your original artwork.

What Is Vivid Pro 9-Colour DTF?

Vivid Pro uses nine inks: CMYK and White, plus four extra channels called RGBO — Red, Green, Blue, and Orange.

Those four extra inks are the difference. Instead of mixing a colour from four channels and hoping it comes out right, the Vivid Pro printer uses dedicated inks to deliver a wider range of tones. It can hit colours directly, rather than approximating them.

The result is over 16 million printable colours, brighter output, smoother gradients, and prints that look very close to what you see on screen.

Vivid Pro vs Standard DTF: Side by Side

Standard DTF Vivid Pro 9-Colour DTF
Ink channels 5 (CMYK + White) 9 (CMYK + RGBO + White)
Printable colours Standard CMYK range 16 million+
Colour accuracy Good Excellent
Gradient smoothness Good Smoother
Fine detail Good Sharper

What Actually Looks Different?

Three things stand out when you compare the two side by side.

Brighter colours. With dedicated Red, Green, Blue, and Orange inks, the Vivid Pro hits colours at full intensity. It does not have to build them from a mix. The output looks more saturated and vivid.

Smoother gradients. More ink channels mean more options when transitioning between tones. Gradients and blended backgrounds look noticeably smoother.

Sharper details. Fine lines, small text, and intricate artwork come through more crisply. The extra colour accuracy helps the printer reproduce detail more faithfully.

Put a Vivid Pro print next to a standard DTF print, and the difference is visible, especially on designs with a wide colour range.

Do I Need to Change My Files?

No. Nothing changes on your end.

Send a PNG file with a transparent background at 300 DPI, as with any DTF order. You do not need to convert anything or set up a special colour profile.

Which One Should You Order?

Both options produce professional-quality transfers. The choice depends on what your design needs.

Vivid Pro 9-colour DTF suits you if:

  • Colour accuracy matters for your brand
  • Your design has gradients, a wide colour range, or a lot of detail
  • You want the print to match your artwork as closely as possible
  • Your customers expect a premium result

Standard DTF is still a good fit if:

  • Your design is mostly text, simple logos, or uses a small number of colours
  • Cost per transfer is your main priority on a large order
  • Your artwork uses muted or limited tones

What Stays the Same

Ordering Vivid Pro does not change anything about how you place your order or apply your transfers.

Same file requirements. No minimums on either option. Same fast turnaround from Brisbane. Same heat press process. Same durability through 60 or more washes without cracking, peeling, or fading.

The only thing that changes is how good the print looks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 9-colour DTF printing?
9-colour DTF uses nine ink channels instead of the standard five. The extra channels add dedicated Red, Green, Blue, and Orange inks. This expands the printable colour range and produces brighter, more accurate output than standard CMYK-based DTF.

Is Vivid Pro 9-colour DTF available in Australia?
Yes. Pure Pack offers Vivid Pro 9-colour DTF heat transfers printed in Brisbane and shipped Australia-wide. No minimum order. Turnaround is 1 to 2 business days.

Do I need to prepare my files differently for 9-colour DTF?
No. Use the same file format you always use: PNG, transparent background, 300 DPI. Nothing changes on your end.

Is 9-colour DTF more durable than standard DTF?
Durability is the same for both. The extra ink channels affect colour output, not how the transfer bonds to fabric. Both options hold up through 60 or more washes when applied correctly.

What does RGBO mean in DTF printing?
RGBO stands for Red, Green, Blue, and Orange. These are the four extra ink channels in a 9-colour DTF printer. They expand the colour range beyond standard CMYK and allow the printer to produce more vivid, accurate colours.

What is the difference between Vivid Pro and standard DTF?
Standard DTF uses five inks (CMYK + White). Vivid Pro uses nine inks (CMYK + RGBO + White). The extra inks give Vivid Pro a wider colour range, resulting in brighter colours, smoother gradients, and sharper detail in the final print.
