UVDTF vs DTF: Which One Should You Choose for Your Business?

Last updated: July 11, 2026

UVDTF and DTF are both direct to film printing methods, but they are built for different jobs. DTF (Direct to Film) heat transfers are made for fabric: t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags and other garments, applied with a heat press. UVDTF (Ultraviolet Direct to Film) stickers are made for hard surfaces: glass, metal, wood, plastic and ceramic, applied by peeling and pressing with no heat needed. If your product is fabric, choose DTF. If your product is a hard surface, choose UVDTF.

What is DTF (Direct to Film)?

DTF printing puts a full-colour design onto a special film, then heat presses it onto fabric. It works on cotton, polyester, nylon, blends, canvas and denim, on both light and dark garments, because a white ink base sits under the design. There is no weeding and no colour limit, so DTF suits t-shirts, hoodies, caps and bags for small runs or one-off custom orders.

What is UVDTF (Ultraviolet Direct to Film)?

UVDTF printing uses UV light to cure the ink instantly as it prints. An adhesive layer is added, so the finished sticker just peels and presses onto a hard surface. No heat press is needed. UVDTF stickers suit tumblers, candle jars, phone cases, skincare bottles and packaging where the surface is smooth and hard rather than fabric.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose DTF if:

  • You are printing on t-shirts, hoodies, uniforms or tote bags
  • Your product needs to stretch and move with fabric
  • Your design will go through regular washing

Choose UVDTF if:

  • You are branding tumblers, candle jars, phone cases or skincare bottles
  • Your surface is hard and smooth, not fabric
  • You want a raised, glossy finish that catches the eye

Use both if:

Many small businesses order DTF for their apparel line and UVDTF for drinkware, packaging or gift items. There is no rule that says you have to pick one. Pure Pack customers regularly order both to cover their full product range in one place.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between DTF and UVDTF?
DTF is designed for fabric and needs a heat press to apply. UVDTF is designed for hard surfaces such as glass, plastic, metal, and ceramics.

Can I use UVDTF stickers on fabric?
No. UVDTF stickers are rigid once applied and will crack or peel if used on fabric that stretches or moves. Use DTF heat transfers for any fabric application.

Can I use DTF heat transfers on glass or metal?
No. DTF transfers need heat and fabric fibres to bond properly. They will not stick to glass, metal or other hard surfaces. Use UVDTF for those.

Which one lasts longer?
Both are durable when applied correctly. DTF heat transfers hold up to 50+ washes on fabric. UVDTF stickers are water-resistant and chip-resistant, and typically last as long as the product they are applied to when kept away from dishwashers and microwaves.

Do I need different equipment for each?
As a buyer ordering pre-made transfers or stickers, you don't need any extra equipment for UVDTF beyond your hands. For DTF, you need a heat press to apply the transfer.

Is one cheaper than the other?
Pricing depends on size and quantity rather than the printing method itself. Both DTF and UVDTF at Pure Pack have no minimum order and no setup fees, so small businesses can order exactly what they need.

Can I order a sample of both before committing to a full order?
Yes. Ordering a small quantity of each first is a practical way to test fit, finish and application before placing a larger order.

What is Vivid Pro 9-colour DTF and does it change this comparison?
Vivid Pro is a 9-colour DTF option for brands that need closer colour accuracy to their original artwork. It is still a fabric transfer applied with a heat press, so the DTF vs UVDTF choice above still applies. Vivid Pro simply gives DTF orders richer colour depth.
